Is The Dmoz Directory Dead? There's been some activity lately in the phone sex categories of the Dmoz directory after a long period of stagnation & a slanted approach by these editors.
Planet has said for some time that major changes and a overhaul were long overdue. A recent review of these categories revealed that many spam entries were finally removed. It's obvious that the selection process was arbitrary rather than thorough since so many broken links remain. It appears some general purge has taken place leaving a hodge podge of sites that are rather thin in places with some well known and popular sites not listed at all.
This section is still a mess and represents an increasingly less relevant listing of anchor sites in the industry. Your website will be much better off with a listing in the Yahoo directory and it's sad but a user is better served by referring to Janes Guide for a more balanced representation of services available.
Arguments have been raised that the particular editors controlling these sections are unavoidably faced with a conflict of interest given their well known personal involvement and presence in the industry that is profit driven. There are some well documented abuse reports available on the world wide web.
Planet thinks it's a damn shame that senior staff and meta editors at Dmoz have allowed the situation to degenerate at the cost of the directorys value, integrity and relevance. We suggest that if the editors cannot police themselves that term limits be imposed on a particular editors handling of a category. This makes perfect sense if the directory intends to discourage editor abuse, allow for a fresh perspective and encourage improvement and refinements.
Our own test search of the keyword "phone sex" within the Dmoz directory left us shaking our heads after reading the Coalition articles. Perhaps new editors of this section without a personal investment & profit motive in the industry would be a wiser choice. Until then you might want to avert your gaze as Dmoz rots from within.
